Exporting from Kenya to the USA — common questions
How much does air freight from Kenya to the USA cost per kg?
$22/kg under 50 kg, $20/kg for 50–149 kg, $17/kg for 150–299 kg and $15/kg from 300 kg. Small boxes are a flat $125, which covers up to 5.5 kg, so fill the box: tea, coffee, spices and gifts all fit in the same price. The rate is door to door, with no fuel surcharges. You never pay more than the next band would cost: if a bigger band is cheaper (47 kg at $22 is $1,034, but 50 kg at $20 is $1,000), we bill the bigger band's price, so the extra kilos are free.
Do I pay US import duty?
Not for Kenyan-made goods: our $22/kg includes US duties for coffee, tea, crafts, clothing, leather and food made in Kenya, shipped with a Certificate of Origin (we arrange it for KSh 1,000; coffee and plain tea don’t need one). Goods made outside Kenya (for example in China), commercial shipments and shipments declared over $1,000 pay US duty at cost, estimated before they fly. US Customs charges duty by where goods were made, not where they are shipped from. The old $800 duty-free allowance for small parcels no longer applies to any country.
How is the chargeable weight worked out?
We charge on the higher of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length × width × height in cm divided by 6,000.
How long does shipping from Kenya to the USA take?
5–14 business days from pickup in Kenya to delivery at the US address.
What documents do I need to export from Kenya?
We prepare the commercial invoice, the KRA export declaration and the air waybill. Plants, food and agricultural goods need a KEPHIS phytosanitary certificate, and duty-free shipments under AGOA need a Certificate of Origin — we arrange each one for a flat KSh 1,000. Food going to the USA also needs an FDA Prior Notice, which we can file for you.
What can I ship from Kenya to the USA?
Coffee, tea, spices and other agricultural products, clothing and textiles, handicrafts, beadwork, leather goods, artwork and business samples. Tell us what you are sending and we will confirm the paperwork before you book.
Do you collect from my door in Kenya?
Yes. We pick up from your home, office or workshop and take the goods to JKIA for you. Pickup is free within 25 km of Nairobi CBD. Further out, it costs KSh 40 per extra km (free for shipments of 50 kg or more, up to 60 km). Upcountry, we collect for KSh 1,500, or you can send it to our Nairobi office.
Is my shipment insured?
Every shipment is covered up to $100 for loss or damage in our care. For full cover, add cargo insurance when you book: 2% of the declared value, minimum $25. It is required for goods worth more than $2,000.
What happens if customs or the FDA holds my shipment for inspection?
Routine customs clearance is included in our price. But US and Kenyan authorities (CBP, FDA, USDA, KRA and KEPHIS) can hold any shipment for a closer look. If the hold is caused by the shipment itself, the extra costs are passed on to you at cost. That covers goods that are poorly packed, unsealed, unlabelled or leaking; homemade or loose food; items missing from the declaration or declared wrongly; and anything flagged as suspicious. The costs include exam and inspection fees, airport or bonded-warehouse storage (demurrage), extra customs and broker fees, re-packing, and returning or destroying refused goods. We send you the receipts, and the charges must be paid before the goods are released. To avoid this, keep food in its original sealed, labelled packaging and declare every item.
